Obituary

Michael Ray Long, age 61, of De Soto, passed away unexpectedly on June 2nd, 2019 as the result of a motorcycle accident.  Michael was born August 27, 1957 at Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, Wisconsin.  Mike was a graduate of De Soto High School and a member of the Class of 1975.  Upon graduation, he joined the United States Navy and went on to graduate from Recruit Training Command in Orlando, Florida in 1975. Mike served on seven different ships with the battleship Wisconsin (BB64) being his favorite.  Mike served honorably as a Machinist Mate for twenty years retiring in 1995. He maintained a connection with the military community as a member of the American Legion and American Legion Riders of District 7.  He was lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).  After leaving the Navy, Mike continued working in the maintenance field, most recently for the Sisters of Perpetual Adoration in La Crosse a position Mike stated was the best job he has ever had. Mike lived a full life and enjoyed motorcycles, Elvis, the Green Bay Packers and John Deere tractors.  Mike completed a Power of Attorney recently and included this comment that has been a comfort to his family, “Thank you for all the years of your love and support to all of my endeavors. Do not worry. I am going to a better place, to be with the Lord.  I will see you there!”

Mike is survived by his parents, Bob and Shirley Long of De Soto, his brother Kevin Long and nephew Zane (Kristina) DeBeck and a great niece Tessa DeBeck born this year on Easter morning.  Mike’s aunts and uncles include:  Eva and Herb Spalla, Darlene Timmer, June Creager, Len Sandvick, Linda and Mike Waldo, Rich and Jan Newmann, and Dale and Alice Long. Mike had numerous cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 22nd, 2019 at 1 p.m. at the De Soto Lutheran Church in De Soto with Pastor Lori Kleppe officiating. Burial will take place in the Walnut Mound Cemetery with the American Legion Riders Wisconsin District 7 escorting the funeral procession.  Military honors will be rendered. Family and friends may call from 11 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. A time for fellowship with Mike’s family will take place at De Soto Lutheran following the committal service at the cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Freedom Honor Flight of La Crosse or the American Legion’s Legacy Scholarship Fund.
